MENOMONIE - Paul Harrison, president of the Western Wisconsin Renewable Energy Cooperative (WWREC), recently announced an additional dividend will be paid out to cooperative members in March. The additional dividend will total more than $700,000.
In making the announcemnet, Harrison said, "By returning yet another dividend check in short order, it proves, even with higher corn prices, ethanol is a sound investment. We have an environmentally-friendly plant that adds more value to local farmers' corn and give investors a nice return." Harrison's announcement follows on the heels of a $1 million dividend, which was paid to cooperative members in December.
State Senator Pat Kreitlow, who visited the WWREC plant last year and is an advocate for renewable fuel production and development, also expressed satisfaction with the announcement.
"I think the WWREC is a role model for farmers, as well as Wall Street. The cooperative members believed they could build an additional market for local corn without sacrificing their ideas and integrity. Whether it is making E-85 available in Menomonie, contributing to the local volunteer fire department or sponsoring high school research projects, the cooperative has been a great corporate citizen while at the same time adopting sound economic practices which provide a return to investors."
Steve Christensen, general manager for the WWREC plant further commented, "In 13 months we have been able to return almost $3 million in dividends to cooperative members. Although it took us a while to have our plant site approved, I think investors appreciate the cooperative board's desire to never give up. By working together, the WWREC proved farmers can be stewards of the land and soil by building a facility which excceeds environmental standards, while also being financially resilient to downturns in today's economy."
